TOOWOOMBA’s Downs Club has outclassed the nation’s finest clubs and restaurants to pick up top awards in the prestigious 2002 Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards.

The club was one of only two in the state to win a rating at the industry’s most coveted awards, achieving a three-glass rating and topping the best club wine list in Australia.

The only other Queensland club to achieve a rating was the Brisbane Club which was given a two-glass rating.

The Downs Club was also named Best Restaurant nationally and was one of only two venues in Queensland to achieve a three-glass rating.

Brisbane’s Grape Food and Wine Bar was the only other Queensland venue to receive a three-glass rating.

The Customs House was awarded a one-glass rating.

Downs Club manager Kylie Moore said the recognition followed similar wins for the past two years and qualified the club for entry in the competition’s hall of fame.

The male-only club, founded in 1889, offers a 15-page wine list offering500 Australian and imported wines valued at up to $1350 abottle.

“We are an exclusive members club,” Ms Moore said.

“Membership is open to men over 18 and the Members Bar is exclusive to men but the restaurant is open to members and their guests, including women,” she said.

Winners of the awards were announced at a cocktail reception in Sydney yesterday by competition organisers Tucker Seabrook, Australia’s oldest liquor merchant.

Sydney’s Restaurant VII was named the national winner of the best restaurant wine list.
